How many are you seating?

These are seating guides for our standard table lengths. The number of people you can seat also depends on chair width, leg positions and whether you use the ends. Rectangular tables come in nine lengths from 120 to 280cm, with widths from 80 to 120cm depending on length.

How many people each length seats

Allow around 60cm of table edge per person as a starting point. Check the actual width of your chairs and the space between the legs, especially if you use armchairs. The seating guide below includes end seats where appropriate. Our two-frame bases sit 25cm in from each end.

Choose a length for the number of people you seat regularly, then consider occasional guests. Our 180cm table is a six-seater; 200cm gives six people more space and can accommodate eight when needed, depending on the chairs and layout.

Choosing the width

The width determines how much space you have for place settings and serving dishes. All our rectangular lengths come in 90, 100, 110 and 120cm widths. The 120cm length also has an 80cm option for smaller spaces.

The calculator compares tops up to 100cm wide. We also offer 110 and 120cm widths: measure these separately and allow at least 90cm clearance on both sides, or 120cm where people walk past.

The clearance rules in practice

A bench can save space when tucked under the table, but leave enough room to get in and out when it is in use. Mark the table and chair positions on the floor with masking tape to check the layout before ordering.

Check the delivery route as well as the dining space. The top and base arrive separately, but doorways, corners, stairs and low ceilings can still affect access. See the delivery page, and contact us with measurements if you are unsure.

Rectangular or square?

Our rectangular tables are 120 to 280cm long, and our square tables are 80 to 150cm wide. We do not make round tables. A square table can suit a square room and allows seating on all four sides. Compare the table footprint and chair clearance before choosing a shape.

Square tables don’t come with matching benches, and the smallest 80cm square takes hairpin legs or a cast iron pedestal, because a pair of heavy steel frames is out of proportion under a top that size.

Benches or chairs?

You can add one or two matching benches to any rectangular table. They’re built from the same oak, finished in the same stain, stand on the same leg style as the table and have a 41cm seat height. They’re sized to tuck fully under the top, which saves floor space when the table isn’t in use. Each bench is £1,440.

Benches offer flexible seating and can keep a room clear when tucked away. Chairs provide individual seats and back support, which many people prefer for longer meals. A bench on one side and chairs on the other is a useful compromise. The Spider pedestal base avoids end frames, making bench access easier.

Height and leg room

Our tables are 75cm high: the legs stand 71cm from the floor to the underside of the 37mm top, which suits the seat height of most dining chairs. If you’re choosing armchairs or carvers, check the arm height. To slide under the table, the arms need to sit comfortably below 71cm. Browse our dining chairs: chair delivery is free when they’re ordered with a table.

For the leg layout under each style, and how it affects who can sit where, see our guide to leg styles. For everything else, from timber to delivery, start with the buying guide.

Size questions

What size dining table do I need for 6 people?

Our 180 and 200cm tables are suitable for six people. A 180 × 90cm table needs about 360 × 270cm of clear space to leave 90cm around it; a 200 × 90cm table needs about 380 × 270cm. Allow more space for walkways and wider chairs.

How much space do you need around a dining table?

Leave at least 90cm between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture so chairs can slide out, and 120cm on any side people walk past. 100cm or more all round feels comfortable.

What size dining table fits a 4-metre room?

In a room around 400×300cm, a 200×90cm table (seats 6) fits with 100cm of clearance at each end. At 420×340cm a 220cm 8-seater fits comfortably.

How wide should a dining table be?

90cm is the standard width: room for a place setting on each side with space down the middle. Choose 100cm if you like serving dishes on the table, and 110 or 120cm for longer tables in bigger rooms. The 80cm width is available only on our 120cm table.

What height is a dining table?

Ours are 75cm from the floor to the top. The legs stand 71cm to the underside of the top, which suits the seat height of most dining chairs, and our matching benches have a 41cm seat height.

How many people does a 240cm table seat?

Our 240cm table seats eight comfortably and can accommodate ten for occasional meals, depending on chair width and leg positions. For a 240 × 90cm top, allow about 420 × 270cm of clear space for 90cm clearance on all sides.
