If you've shopped for a family dining table in the last decade, you've almost certainly ended up looking at 180cm tables, and there's a reason for that. It seats four for breakfast, six at Sunday lunch and eight at a squeeze for Christmas, and it fits comfortably in a 4m × 4m dining room with the chairs pulled out. It's the dimension that's been working for British dining rooms for two centuries.
The dining room of a 1930s semi, an Edwardian villa or a new-build four-bed is typically 3.5 to 4.5m square. A 180cm × 90cm table sits in the middle with 75 to 90cm of walking space all round, which is the comfortable minimum. It's the configuration we ship more of than any other.
Single-storey rear extensions are typically 4 to 5m wide, with the dining zone usually taking up about two-thirds of that.
