Our workshop is in Wickford. The bench, the planer, the spray booth and the seven people who build these tables, all of them, every day, twelve miles from Southend and ten from Chelmsford. We're at Sorrell Farm, Meadow Lane, Wickford SS11, five minutes off the A127 and easy to find from the A130. The workshop occupies an old engineering shed: two timber bays, a steel-fabrication corner, a finishing room and the office. It's not a showroom, it's where the work happens, but if you're local and want to see the boards going through the planer before you order, we don't mind people dropping in. Email or call ahead.

Because the workshop is here in Essex, most CM, SS, RM, IG and southern CO postcodes get their table in approximately four to five weeks from order, sometimes faster when a finished spec matches what's already on the workshop floor. Our team makes the local Essex delivery run two or three times a week. The signature Spider single-pedestal base tends to need the top end of that window due to extra fabrication on the cast pedestal.

Twenty-eight percent of the tables we've ever sold went to an Essex address. We know what fits a Chigwell mansion as well as we know what fits a Billericay new-build.

Most of the RM postcode is interwar housing, three-bed semis from the 1920s and 1930s with bay-windowed front rooms knocked through to the kitchen and modest dining footprints. Why pay a high-street oak retailer for veneer?

There's a particular kind of Essex new-build dining room, bi-folds onto a south-facing patio, kitchen island in white quartz, room enough for a 200cm table, where most people end up at one of the well-known high-street oak retailers, walk out with something that looks like solid wood, and find out a year later it's veneer over MDF or kiln-dried softwood with a tinted lacquer. Once it chips at the edge, that's that.
