Built by hand using traditional methods

If you walk into one of the big oak chains — Oak Furniture Land, Oak Furniture Superstore, Ennis & Brown, take your pick — you'll see plenty of tables that look thick and substantial from the side.

Look underneath though, and it's a different story: a much thinner tabletop, with extra timber added around the edges to create the fake appearance of a chunky slab, or faked live edges carved from cheap stock wood using a grinder. The table will be made from 10–12 really thin slabs glued together via a robot in China, the cheapest possible way to make an oak table.

On some live-edge tables, even the natural-looking edge is a separate piece glued around a top that's actually only around 20mm thick.

We set Timber Row up to offer true solid oak tables at affordable prices. Ours doesn't just look 37mm thick. It is 37mm thick! It's not made from 12 cheap strips of wood, it's made from two huge, heavy, centrepiece slabs of solid oak. We make our tabletops from two solid French oak slabs, carefully joined by hand for a seamless finish that's full thickness throughout, with no taper, no hollow underside and no eight-stave glue-up running across the surface.

Every board is graded, kiln-dried, machined, finished and assembled in our Wickford workshop. The timber comes from France, but every step from saw to delivery happens here in Essex, by hand, using traditional methods.

Every table is built and finished by Sam in our Wickford workshop. From selecting the oak to the final coat of finish, the work stays in our hands — not on a factory production line.

No veneer. No MDF. No hollow core. Just full-thickness French oak, selected for its grain and natural character. Knots, colour variation and the occasional weather check aren’t disguised — they’re part of what makes every table different.

When you see "solid oak dining table" and "£2,000" together at the chains, what's described above is generally what's in the box. We can do better than that on the same money because we build one design in batches, as a small team, with no chain markup to absorb.

Where it comes from

French oak with a hundred years of history.

French oak grows slowly. The trees our boards come from are routinely 200 to 300 years old by the time they're felled, planted in the 1700s and 1800s by foresters working to a centuries-long timber cycle. That slow growth gives the wood a tight, dense grain, which is what keeps a 37mm slab sitting flat for the next fifty years.

We work with three independent French sawmills in Burgundy and the Loire, who ship the boards by container to Essex. Once the timber arrives, the build and finish all happen at our Wickford workshop, in the same building our sister brand Sorrell & Smith has been making bespoke commissions out of since 2022.

Premium-grade oak. At high-street prices.

Timber Row sells the kind of solid oak dining table the high street charges around £2,000 for, except ours is built from genuine 37mm French oak rather than veneer over MDF. We can hold that price because we sell direct from the workshop in Wickford, with no out-of-town showroom to fund, no middleman to pay and no four-month bespoke wait while a contractor builds it for us.

Each table is bench-built one at a time, by hand. There's no flat-pack arriving from overseas and no production line. It's one maker and a small team, working through the build queue in one Essex building.

100% UK-made. The workshop is in Wickford, Essex, and the steel bases come from a small fabricator in Birmingham, so the whole table is built within 200 miles of you.
Bench-built by hand. One maker, one table, start to finish. Roughly 14 hours of skilled labour go into each top before it leaves the workshop.
Solid French oak. Slow-grown timber from the working oak forests of central France. Many of the trees are 200 to 300 years old by the time they're felled, which gives the wood a tight, dense grain that fast-grown commercial oak can't match.
Workshop-direct pricing. We sell straight from the Wickford bench the table is built on, with no showroom rent, no middleman and no chain markup. The result is about the same outlay as the veneer-over-MDF tables on a retail park, but in solid French oak.

Is it really joined from just two massive slabs of Oak?

Most "solid oak" dining tables on the high street aren't made from one slab, or even two. They're six, eight, sometimes ten narrow strips glued up edge-to-edge, because that timber is much cheaper to source. It's also why so many oak tops end up with that striped, butcher-block look across the surface.

We don't build that way. Every Timber Row top is just two full-thickness slabs of solid French oak, each wide enough to do most of the job on its own, joined through the centre with matched grain. The result is a single visible seam, near-invisible once the oil's applied.

A genuine one-piece slab wide enough for a dining table is rare timber and a different product altogether. That's our sister brand Sorrell & Smith's territory: twelve-week bespoke live-edge commissions, for clients who want a piece that's truly one of a kind. Two dedicated slabs gets you the closest thing to that single-slab look in a configured table, shipped in roughly four to five weeks.

How is Timber Row different from Sorrell & Smith?

They share a workshop and a family, but they're different products. Sorrell & Smith is a bespoke commission specialist, building single-slab live-edge tables in custom sizes from rare wide boards, hand-finished over roughly twelve weeks for clients who want a piece that's one of a kind. Timber Row is a focused production model: a configured two-slab solid French oak dining table in defined sizes, batched and held in stock, shipped in roughly four to five weeks. Different timber sourcing, different construction and a different process, so think of them as two ways to buy a table from the same workshop.

Will the table fit through my doorway?

Yes. The table ships as a top and a base, with the legs bolted on after the top is in the room. Standard UK doorways (760mm and up) handle every size we offer, including the 10-seater.

What if I don't like it when it arrives?

Send it back within 30 days for a full refund, no questions asked. We'll arrange free collection. The only thing we ask is that you keep the original packaging.
