Chelmsford has the most varied housing stock in central Essex, Edwardian terraces near the Cathedral and the High Street, mid-century semis through Springfield and Great Baddow, and large new-build estates in Beaulieu Park, Channels and Newland Spring. We've shipped tables into all of them.

For Edwardian villas in Old Moulsham, the 180cm × 90cm in walnut sits well between original chimney breasts. For Springfield and Galleywood semis, the 180cm × 100cm in chocolate is the most-shipped size. For Beaulieu and Channels new-builds, bigger open-plan kitchen-diners, the 240cm × 100cm in natural oil with box-steel legs is the configuration most customers go for.

All nine lengths (120cm to 280cm in 20cm increments) and five widths (80cm, 90cm, 100cm, 110cm, 120cm) are configurable, so if your dining room measurements are slightly awkward, the table will still fit.

A note on the comparison

The high-street oak retailer
isn't selling oak.

If you've shopped for a dining table in Chelmsford recently, you've probably been to one of the well-known high-street oak retailers off the A12 or in the Riverside retail park. Their entry-level dining tables look like solid oak and are priced around the same as ours, but most of them are veneer over MDF, or kiln-dried softwood with an oak-tinted lacquer. Once a chip lifts, it's done.

Ours costs about the same and is a different object. The top is solid timber for its full 37mm depth, edge-jointed from two wide boards of slow-grown French oak and sealed by hand in food-safe hardwax oil. The steel base is powder-coated in whichever finish you pick, guaranteed for ten years, with the timber-to-base fixing warranted for as long as you own it.

The reason those two things can both be true is that you are buying it ten miles from where it was made, with no showroom rent and nobody's commission folded into the price.

We can sell the real thing for the same price because we sell direct from our Wickford workshop, ten miles down the A130, no out-of-town showroom, no middleman, no four-month bespoke wait.
