How your table is madeFour steps, all in our Wickford workshop
  1. Two matched slabs. We choose two wide boards of solid French oak that match in grain and colour, and machine their joining edges dead straight.
  2. Glued and domino-jointed. Hardwood domino tenons are set into both edges at regular intervals along the full length, then the joint is glued and clamped. The result is a seamless join that’s as strong as the oak around it.
  3. Hand-sanded and hand-finished. The top is sanded flat by hand at its full 37mm thickness, then Sam works in two coats of hardwax oil by hand.
  4. Slotted C-channel bars underneath. Bars fixed to the underside through slots let the oak breathe and move naturally with the seasons while holding the top flat against warping and cupping. That’s backed by our 10-year structural guarantee.

What you're not getting:

You're not getting veneer over MDF, hollow construction or a particleboard core dressed up to look like solid timber. You're not getting a thin tabletop with a chunky edge glued on to create the illusion of thickness. Every Timber Row table is 37mm of genuine solid French oak from top to bottom. That’s why it’s heavy, built to last, and why two-person delivery isn’t a luxury — it’s what a genuinely substantial solid oak table requires.

Every tabletop receives two coats of food-safe hardwax oil, applied and buffed by hand in our Essex workshop. Rather than covering the timber with a plastic-like coating, the oil nourishes and protects the oak while preserving its natural texture. It’s easy to maintain and can be refreshed for decades to come.

Beautiful enough for special occasions, practical enough for every day. The hardwax oil finish resists spills, is food safe and easy to maintain. As the years pass, the oak develops a richer patina rather than wearing out, and because it’s genuine solid timber it can be sanded and refinished whenever needed. This isn’t furniture to replace in ten years—it’s furniture to keep for decades.

Every Timber Row table is built by Sam Sorrell in our small workshop in rural Essex. From selecting the oak, meticulously filling it with resin and seamlessly joining the slabs, to sanding, oiling and final assembly, every stage happens under one roof. No factory lines, no mass production — just a small team building one table at a time using traditional methods.

What people ask before buying.

Is it really solid oak all the way through?

Yes. Every Timber Row tabletop is genuine solid French oak throughout, with no veneer, MDF or hollow core hidden beneath the surface. The top is formed from two carefully matched slabs joined through the centre, creating a substantial tabletop that’s built to last for generations.

Why two slabs and not one?

Single slabs wide enough to make a dining-room top (anywhere from 80cm to 120cm across) are rare timber, and a different proposition altogether. Our sister brand Sorrell & Smith specialises in that kind of work: live-edge single slabs, hand-built bespoke over twelve-week commissions and custom-cut to the client's room. That's the route for someone who wants a piece that's truly one of a kind.

At Timber Row we take two solid full-thickness slabs of the same French oak and join them through the centre into one continuous 37mm top with a near-invisible seam. The result is the same timber, the same thickness and the same solid construction, in a configured spec built and shipped in roughly four to five weeks.

How are the two slabs joined?

With glue and dominoes. Once the joining edges are machined dead straight, we set hardwood domino tenons into both slabs at regular intervals along the full length, then glue and clamp the joint. The dominoes lock the two boards in line and add strength, and the glue makes them one piece, so the join is seamless and as strong as the oak around it. The top is then hand-sanded and hand-finished.

Underneath, slotted C-channel bars are fixed to the underside of the top. The slots let the oak breathe and move naturally with the seasons, while the bars hold it flat against warping and cupping, backed by our 10-year structural guarantee.

What does the 10-year guarantee cover?

Every table carries our 10-Year Structural Guarantee, covering defects in materials, construction and workmanship — a centre join failing, the timber-to-base fixing letting go, a structural weld failing, or splitting and distortion caused by a fault in how the table was built. Solid wood does move a little with the seasons and that's normal, but where movement is abnormal and the cause turns out to be a defect on our side, it's covered: we'll repair or replace the affected part. Where does the French oak come from?

We buy graded full-thickness oak boards from specialist French timber suppliers, who ship them to Essex by container. From there, every step (drying, build, finish, assembly) happens in our own workshop. The whole journey from sawmill to delivery stays in-house.

Does the price include the legs?

The headline price includes a pair of heavy powder-coated steel legs in any of our four standard styles (Box, X-frame, Metal Hairpin and Trapezium) in your chosen colour. We also handcraft a range of solid French oak legs (A-Frame, I-Shape, X-Crossover and Oak Hairpin) at no extra cost, with the Oak T-Shape an extra £50 and the Oak Heavy-Duty X an extra £250. Our eight designer steel legs (Curva, Designer X, Kink Trapezium, Shapeshifter, Swirl, Twin Triangle, Twin Diamond and Twin Curvy) are an extra £265, and the signature Spider single-pedestal base is an extra £620. The configurator updates the total live as you choose.

How far in from the ends are the legs?

250mm. Every leg frame is set 25cm in from each end of the table, so whoever sits at the head of the table has proper knee room and isn’t straddling a leg. The frames stand 71cm from the floor to the underside of the top, which makes a finished table height of 75cm.

How long does it take to make?

Roughly four to five weeks from order to delivery. We keep finished tops in stock at the standard sizes, then apply your chosen stain, fit your chosen base and let it cure before shipping.

What's solid French oak like to live with?

Tighter and finer-grained than English oak, with a warmer honey tone. You'll see real grain figuring, the occasional small knot, and natural variation board to board, all of which is just what wood does — along with a little seasonal movement as your home's humidity changes. Every board is properly dried and stabilised before it gets near a finished top, and the construction is backed by our 10-year structural guarantee. Treat it with the included hardwax oil once a year and it'll outlast every veneered table on the market.

What if something does go wrong?

It's uncommon, but worth knowing in advance. Over the years across the workshop we've had a handful of tops cup or check slightly, a couple of cosmetic shipping marks, and one base arrive bent in transit. In every case we collected the table, fixed it (or built a new one), and shipped it back at no charge. Solid oak is a natural material and it does sometimes move, which is why the 10-year guarantee is there in the first place. If anything looks off when yours arrives, just take a photo and email us, and we'll sort it out.
