Why slotted

Held flat, free to move.

A solid-wood top swells and shrinks across its width as the seasons change. Screw it rigidly to a steel bar and something has to give — usually the top, which cups or splits.

The long slots let the screws slide as the timber moves, while the stiff C-section holds the top flat against warping and cupping. It’s how every Timber Row table is built underneath.

Which length?

The bars run across the width of the top, so as a rule of thumb pick the longest length that still sits comfortably inside the top’s width, clear of the edges and the legs.
